Brisbane - Further reading

Further reading on Brisbane

  • Not so much a book as a brochure, the Queensland Tourist & Travel Corporation's A Guide to Experiencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture covers culture and art, and is free. If you want to know more about Aboriginal culture and history, Geoffrey Blainey's Triumph of the Nomads is excellent.
  • Ross Fitzgerald's A History of Queensland is a comprehensive, well-researched and sometimes controversial study.
  • David Malouf is one of Queensland's most internationally recognised writers - have a read of the evocative tale of Brisbane boyhood, Johnno.
  • Aboriginal poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) was born on North Stradbroke Island and is buried there - her 1964 We Are Going was the first published work by an Aboriginal woman.
  • Other novels set in Brisbane include Thea Astley's Hunting the Wild Pineapple, Janet Turner Hospital's Charade and Andrew McGahan's controversial Vogel Prize-winner, Praise, set in the seedy underbelly of Fortitude Valley, and later made into a film.
