Cozumel - Further reading

Further reading on Cozumel

  • For some pre-journey background knowledge, hunt down a copy of Maya: The Riddle and Rediscovery of a Lost Civilization by Charles Gallenkamp, or the good but more brainy The Maya by eminent Mayaist Michael D Coe.
  • Friar Diego de Landa wrote a superb book on Mayan culture and civilization, which, ironically enough, he actually played a major role in wiping out. It's called Yucatán Before and After the Conquest.
  • If you dig on digs, read Joyce Kelly's very authoritative and comprehensive paperback An Archaeological Guide to Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.
  • The Blood of Kings: Dynasty and Ritual in Maya Art by Linda Schele and Mary Ellen Miller is an illustrated walk through Mayan art and culture, with an emphasis on sacrifices, bloodletting, torture of captives and other macabre aspects.
